New Cafe

What a view!

With one of my fav cafes closed, and another moving, I thought it time to get out and find a new cafe. And today, I’ve done just that. I’m left wondering why on earth didn’t I try this cafe sooner! And I’m relieved I’m not totally set in my ways, and I can try new cafes, and get back into the natural flow, which of course helps the words to get written, and the creativity to flow.

Not only did I get the benefits of writing in a new envionment with a fantastic view, I also had a relaxing walk here and back. A win-win on many levels.

With the start of a new story being written today, and the fresh air clearing my mind with the walk there and back, I’ll be coming back here for sure…hopefully tomorrow!

Stuck

I’ve been stuck on these two rows for about a week! I found a mistake, so frogged it, re-did the rows, made another mistake, frogged it again. Caught up. Another mistake! Frogged it.

Now I’m taking a break.

It’s a basic stitch, so something else must be going on here. I’m rather busy right now, so tired when I sit to crochet. While I want to crochet I don’t have the headspace for it. Frustrating on one hand, but so is re-doing the same two rows.

Sometimes you just got to step away from the creative project, breathe, have a break, then get back into it.

I look forward to getting back to crocheting this blanket…next week sometime.

Inspiring Myself

Today, I’ve given myself a time out of life. I’m doing the minimal today. As part of relaxing, I sat down and watched the DVD of The Greatest Showman. I’d seen it on the big screen a few months ago, and loved it. This time around I enjoyed it just as much, and it was a good chance to continue with a crocheting project. The music, the costumes, the acting, the singing, the story, were fantastic. Then to continue the day of chilling I watch the ‘extras’.

I found myself inspired.The Greatest Showman.jpg

I found myself reaching for my phone so I could type down the thoughts that were flowing from the ideas that had suddenly come loose and floated to my consciousness, catching them in black words on my phone.

It was great. While I haven’t been in a drought, it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed the simple flow of inspiration through me.

Often as a teacher, and mentor, even writer, I’m inspiring others. I love it. But I also need to be inspired myself. Sure, I have the things I do to stir up the creativity, and ideas, and get myself inspired – like walking along the beach, reading, painting, crafts, blogging, and going out with people. But this was the first time I was conscious that by watching a movie (while crocheting), and then watching the ‘extras’ and seeing other artists enthusiastic with what they were doing, my own creative well filled. I was overflowing with inspiration for the different creative projects I am planning.lettie and barmum.jpg

And I’ve been reminded that there are hidden benefits for me in watching a movie. Maybe it had a lot to do with the movie being The Greatest Showman, which was an amazing product of so many different artists coming together, and an inspiring story. I’m sure it was the determination in Lettie, in particular, which got my creative juices flowing.

I’ll be watching this movie again.

Snatching Time to Write

Sometimes when and where I write isn’t planned. Today, I did my usual writing (which was actually editing today), then while at the shopping centre I went and did a few jobs. During this time, bubs well asleep. A deep sleep. One which I was very reluctant to wake him from, even though by this time I was more than ready to go home, and I was tired and not at all inspired to write.

I listened to my gut, which was to go sit at another café, and to write. I’m glad I did. Because even though I was tired, I managed to write quite a bit. A lot actually. So it was a very satisfying session as I hadn’t planned writing this book today. And I wasn’t visited by the muse. It was all about me using the time that unexpectedly came available.

writing inspiration at the beachWhen I got home, I decided some fresh air was in order, so I got bubs back in the pram, Kimba on the lead and off we went to walk along the beach. During this time my mind started composing an abstract I had worked on at the first café. Suddenly my thoughts were ordered. So I sat on a bench and wrote them in my phone capturing the essence. Was this the muse? Maybe or maybe not. I think it was more to do that I had worked on the abstract this morning and so it was in the forefront of my mind. Then while walking, my subconscious pushed forward the suggestions I needed.

So for a day which was going to be a bit unproductive writing wise, turned out to be very successful. Only because I was open to snatching time to write. This is the writer’s journey, going with the unexpected.

Too Early!

With a dentist appointment scheduled this morning (2 fillings!) and bubs unsettled during my teeth check up the other week, I’ve decided to come early so I can get a coffee and settle him with a walk.

With a need to have some creative space I decided not to bring the writing I’m working on at the moment (I’m sleep deprived as well). But… after arriving an entire hour early (I’m in shock how I even managed to do that?!) I’m sitting in a cafe drumming my fingers not knowing what to do. Bubs is fighting sleep, but is at least content, and I the coffee has given me a clear head and I do actually want to write! All I have is a near new notebook, and no ideas. Just the desire to want to write! If only I bought along that novel I’m currently reading?! Which I had intended to do but after the third trip to pack the car this morning the thought of finding time to read seemed something so next year. Plus I don’t want to feel like I have to write every time I’m at a cafe. It’s almost be giving myself permission not to that I now want to!

This time is valuable, both thinking and chilling. At least I’ve used this time to ponder, and write this post. And I’d better finish up or before I know it I’ll be late!

Culling 1.5k words

I’m not sure how I’ve managed this, but for the academic paper I’m writing I’ve somehow gone over the word count by 1.5k!

Kimba home from the vets.JPG

This is after a hectic weekend with a very sick dog (and going to the emergency vets twice and having poor Kimba stay in over 24hours. He’s finally recovered now thank goodness), hurting my hand so it’s difficult to type, crocheting a shawl, and mentoring two writing students. Oh, and I’m heavily preggers. I must have had a lot to say or something on the matter of the relationship between history and fiction despite all of these distractions being thrown at me! Either that or I’ve somehow turned into super woman! 😉 And I’ve got extra powers to get through everything… if only! 😉

Anyway, this morning’s job is to cull 1.5k words, so this paper can be submitted tomorrow. What better way to do this than at a cafe, and of course outside in the beautiful autumn weather. I can soak up the sunshine and use it to help as motivation 🙂 It’s the simple things that can help you keep going after a busy time. heart clipartAnd looking on the bright side of life. I’m not sure how I’ve managed this, but I have, perhaps because I have lots of support from friends and family, so while I did this alone, I wasn’t alone. With one step at a time, I’ve gotten through the life’s challenges.

Now, back to culling some words…

Doing it Differently

I don’t normally stick notes or anything into my journals. I might it if is a travel journal, but I don’t for my everyday journaling. For some reason I simply write by hand.

But this time I’ve decided to do things differently. Maybe it is the style of this new journal, full of inspirational quotes at the bottom of the pages? Or the colourful inspiring cover, and occasional internal pages which seem to call my muse to me.

Either way, I’ve started by sticking in a number of fun quotes that I’ve collected from fortune cookies. But there’s more to the story. I’ve had these fortune cookies when going out with my very close writing friends. When we have our catch up over Thai food and talk all things writing and life. And with one friend now moved away, these quotes remind me that I am supported on my writing journey, and that we had some fun evenings together. They are more than just quotes from fortune cookies. They are little gateways into my recent memories, and so they now have a special place at the start of my new journal.

No Lights!

I was just getting into my editing of my academic paper in a cafe when of all things there was a power failure! It’s sort of exciting but also frustrating. It’s now a little too dark to edit on paper and I was just in the flow!

The unexpected things which disrupt the flow! But the question is has this been beneficial or detrimental? Or neither?

I did consider leaving, but then a few lights came on nearby, so I had a bit of light to continue. I kept editing, mainly because I was so close to finishing this task! And I wanted to not just finish but continue what I was doing. And I couldn’t help think no his people would write in the most difficult situations and poor lighting. So why not keep going?!

All sorts of events and things can disrupt the flow, it’s how you react that matters. I could’ve gone home, but I stayed, wanting to keep connected to even a little of the flow I was in. And it helped. Round one of editing done!

PJ Day!

I’m having a pj day as part of my long weekend cave style! As an adult there’s something very satisfying spending the entire day in you pjs even when the weather is good! 💕

I have a relaxing day ahead, of reading, crocheting, and TV binging 💕

Today is the perfect day to start

I hadn’t planned to be writing in a new notebook today, but it was a joy to open up my handbag and to see the new notebook ready for me to write in. Especially this notebook, with the words “today is the perfect day to start something.’

It certainly was the perfect day to start something. heart clipart
